The American Cinematheque recently hosted a tribute to legendary filmmaker Kenneth Branagh. The tribute featured screenings of four films that are featured in his latest film Belfast, a semi-autobiographical love letter to his hometown, and culminated in a Belfast screening followed by a Q&A with writer and director Kenneth Branagh.

Belfast tells the story of a nine-year-old boy whose life is turned upside down when rioting breaks out on his street between the Protestants and the Catholics in 1969. Though the film is placed in a time of violence and uncertainty, the tone is as light-hearted and lovable as the adorable protagonist Buddy. (You can read our full Belfast review here). The film has received seven Academy Awards nominations including Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Directing. Here are five facts that we learned about Belfast from the writer and director Kenneth Branagh.

The Belfast screenplay was 50 years in the making

When Kenneth Branagh was asked “how long did it take you to write the script?”, he replied “8 weeks and 50 years”.

The screenplay for Belfast was written during the beginning of the pandemic. Like many of us during lockdown, Branagh was faced with a desire to understand who he is and the time to process suppressed memories. In a fit of creative fervor, Branagh spent hours in his garden shed writing down childhood memories on notebook cards.

“The goal was to be as sort of unimpeded by anything other really than my own creative instinct.”

These memories were soon fashioned into scenes, and in a mere eight weeks, the screenplay for Belfast was written.

Belfast is a pandemic baby

When asked “What was the catalyst to make you write it (Belfast) right now? And go in the shed as you say”, Branagh’s response was incredibly relatable. He was feeling a desire to reach out to friends and family across the world to check in on them, and he received many calls and texts as well, as most of us did. During such a time of uncertainty, many of us wanted to strengthen our bonds of community.

“In those moments, just as I had remembered in Belfast during that time of danger, human contact, community, family, (and) friendship all began to assert a sort of tremendous importance. And I think I was made aware of how valuable it was in this lockdown to be reminded of how blessed I am with friends and family, and people who love me and vice versa. And then it sent me right back to this other time when the nine-year-old me sort of experienced the same thing.”

Triggered by the feeling of uncertainty, Branagh was mentally transported back to his childhood in Northern Ireland and began reliving memories, many of which he had forgotten about. And, as many creative people did, he began writing about it as a creative outlet for his introspection.

Caitriona Balfe and Jamie Dornan are hotter than everyone’s parents

When casting for the film, it was important to Branagh to cast actors with personal connections to Ireland. Most of the cast is Irish including Caitriona Balfe and Jamie Dornan who play characters based on Branagh’s parents. When asked “were your parents really this gorgeous?” he diplomatically responded by saying “Well probably nobody’s parents were quite this gorgeous,”.

However, he describes his parents as having the onscreen chemistry that we see between Balfe and Dornan.

“…I think my parents had a sort of fizzle. I would say a passion between them. Whether you like it or not, the crockery did fly across that kitchen table.”

Kenneth Branagh would never make it as a thief

There is a scene in Belfast where Buddy tries to steal a candy bar from a local shop. But the halfhearted attempt is thwarted by the savvy shop owner who chases Buddy and his cousin out of the shop. All they managed to take was a pack of Turkish delights, which neither of them wanted to eat. The shop owner reports the incident to the police and, more frighteningly, to Buddy’s mother, and Buddy learns his lesson to never shoplift candy again.

Branagh referred to the scene as “the grand larceny involving the Turkish delight” and said that the scene was based on true events which played out almost identically to the movie. Branagh confessed that he’d never make it as a criminal since the shop was a “bad choice of location” just down the street from his house. He was caught almost instantly and stated “(my) mother was much more frightening than the policeman”.

Belfast is “The story of one boy, one family, one street”

The beauty of Belfast is that it really is the story of one little boy’s experience. Although Ireland has faced its fair share of conflict throughout history, through the lens of a nine-year-old the audience experiences a complex environment in a simplified manner.

Branagh stated that while the film “couldn’t be objective truth” because he was telling the story through the lens of his own experience, he did watch hundreds of hours of news coverage from the time. This way he was able to balance real historical events with the creative memory of a boy. He described “the overwhelming weight that you feel when you write anything about Ireland. The history is so complex, it’s so deep,” and cites that as the reason why he had never written anything about Ireland before. But once he shook off the intimidation of writing about his country’s complicated and often controversial past, he gave us a beautiful story that is as relevant today as it was when he experienced those events as a child.

Is There a Reason Why I Like Rewatching the Same Movies and Shows?

Have you ever wondered why it’s less stressful to watching something that you’ve already seen before? There are some interesting psychological reasons behind why some people prefer rewataching shows and movies over watching something new.

Routines can be very calming, and watching tv is no different! Choosing something that you’ve already seen allows the brain to wind down. You don’t have to work overtime processing new information, instead the brain uses repetition to feel comfortable and secure.

There is a lot of nostalgia associated to rewatching our old favorites. We have memories associated with our favorite shows and rewatching them unlocks positive emotions.

During times of stress and unpredictability our brains long to create structure in the chaos. Rewatching shows provides us with a sense of self-control. Since the information is easier to process during a rewatch it allows us to feel happy emotions. So fire up those old favorites and allow your brain to take a much needed break!

Why You Need to Watch the Harry Potter Reunion Special

The cast of Harry Potter is reunited in a room with luggage.

It’s been 20 years since Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone was released, and the cast has been reunited to discuss the profound impact the franchise has had on their lives.

Here are the reasons why you need to watch Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts.

Nostalgia

It’s almost unreal that 20 years have passed since the first Harry Potter movie was released in theater. I still remember sitting in a dark movie theater and being awestruck by seeing my favorite books come to life on screen. It is hard to describe just how profound of an impact this series has had on my life, but luckily I don’t really have to. Every millennial knows how big of a deal the books and movies were. Even the ones who didn’t read the books knew lots about them because they were everywhere! And for a generation who was obsessed with video games and computers, it’s a bit ironic to also be known as the first generation to obsessively read books so long that some of them weighed over 2 lbs!

Look behind the scenes at how it all began

The movie franchise had a lot to live up to since the books were wildly popular. But the director of the first two films, Chris Columbus, brought the books to life so beautifully that it laid the foundation for the success of the rest of the franchise. From critical casting choices, transcendent set design, and a playful atmosphere on set, every detail established in the first film was critical in bringing us into the wizarding world and making us never want to leave.

The reunion special has interviews with director Chris Columbus and important actors like Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint in which they describe what it was like becoming a part of the Harry Potter universe, and what the books meant to them personally before they ever knew that they would star in the movies.

Elle Fanning interview at the Elle Fanning Tribute hosted by American Cinematheque at the Aero Theatre

Elle Fanning interview as a part of the Elle Fanning Tribute hosted by American Cinematheque at the Aero Theatre.

Highlights From the American Cinematheque Elle Fanning Tribute

Elle Fanning may only be 24, but when you start acting at 2 years old you can accomplish a lot in a couple of decades!

The younger sister of actor Dakota Fanning, Elle’s first role was in 2001’s I Am Sam where she played the younger version of her sister. She has since gone on to star in several movies and television shows including The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Maleficent, and The Great.

To honor her already impressive career, American Cinematheque recently hosted a two-night tribute to Elle Fanning. The tribute included screenings of The Great, Teen Spirit, The Girl From Plainville, and The Neon Demon, and an in-person interview with Elle at the Aero Theatre.

Elle Fanning discussed her body of work and what it is like to work with some of the leading actors in Hollywood. When asked about working on The Great, she talked about how starring in a comedy has challenged her in new ways. Fanning is known for taking more dramatic roles, but there’s no denying that her comedy and her serious moments playing the legendary monarch Catherine the Great are equally as impactful.

Comedy may not be her comfort zone, but she is enjoying the chance to stretch herself as an actor.

“Being surrounded by such incredible artists has helped me deliver the punchline. Because you read the script and you’re like ‘oh that’s a joke’, like I have to say the joke, I have to get that right or it will fall flat if you don’t deliver it correctly”.

It may be a lot of pressure to deliver the jokes and get the laughs, but it helps when you’re surrounded by hilariously talented actors. She loves working with her fellow cast members, especially her onscreen hubby because, “Nicholas Hoult is so comedically gifted”. And while comedy may be new for Fanning, she definitely holds her own in every scene.

“Nicholas Hoult is so comedically gifted.”

One special component of the Elle Fanning tribute was that it included screenings of two episodes of her tv shows, The Great and The Girl From Plainville. Fanning stated that, “It’s so rare to see…a television show with an audience. To hear your reactions and ooh’s and ah’s was really cool”. Some of the best content that is being produced right now is heading straight to streaming platforms. There was something very special about experiencing a TV show in a packed theater, and that’s coming from the perspective of an audience member. I can’t imagine how much more impactful that moment must have been for the star of the show.

“It’s so rare to see…a television show with an audience. To hear your reactions and ooh’s and ah’s was really cool”.

Fanning may be young, but she is already proving that she is a talented actor with the determination to continue improving in her craft. She is currently filming the third season of The Great and says that looking back at the first two seasons she can already see “an evolution from myself from the first season to where I am now. I’m 24. The pilot I did when I was 20. I feel like I’ve grown so much as an actor. And I need to keep reminding myself that those milestone moments (are important). Don’t take that for granted”.

Elle Fanning is such a powerhouse on screen and attending this tribute opened my eyes to just how talented she is. I don’t know about you, but I’m feeling quite inspired to watch her entire filmography.

Why Did Will Smith Hit Chris Rock in the Face at the Oscars?

Will Smith stunned the world when he stormed the stage to slap Chris Rock during the 94th Academy Awards. Image courtesy of ABC.

Chris Rock, and the world, were shocked when Will Smith walked on stage to slap the comedian after he made a tasteless joke about his wife Jada Pinkett-Smith.

The 94th Academy Awards were off to a pretty standard start. Stars and film lovers alike were bubbling with excitement to see the historic awards show return to its pre-pandemic glory. The red carpet glamour was on point, and the hilarious hosts of the night Wanda Sykes, Regina Hall, and Amy Schumer poked fun at the audience in lighthearted jest.

But the night took a turn when comedian Chris Rock took the stage and made a joke about Jada Pinkett-Smith. He told Jada that he can’t wait to see her in G.I. Jane II.

G.I. Jane movie poster. Image courtesy of IMDb.

This comment was particularly offensive because Jada Pinkett-Smith suffers from alopecia, a condition that causes baldness. Jada clearly was offended by the comment and rolled her eyes at the joke. Will Smith was so upset that he stormed on stage and slapped Chris Rock across the face.

When he returned to his seat he yelled to Chris Rock to “Keep my wife’s name out of your fucking mouth!”. Many people saw this happen on live tv and were shocked. My tv cut out all sound at that part. My cat loves to run across the sound bar and mute the sound, so I thought that was what had happened and was very shocked to discover later the true reason for the sound loss.

The night only got more awkward when Will Smith won “Best Actor” for his role in King Richard.

Will Smith gave a convoluted acceptance speech when he won the Academy Award for ‘Best Actor” for his performance in King Richard. Image courtesy of ABC.

Will Smith’s rambling acceptance speech included an apology, but it wasn’t the apology that we were expecting.

“I want to apologize to the academy. I want to apologize to all my fellow nominees.”

The speech was notably lacking an apology to Chris Rock, or for his action of hitting him in the face.

In an effort to keep it positive, a crying Will Smith told us about the advice that he had just received from Denzel Washington.

“At your highest moment, be careful. That’s when the devil comes for you.”

The blow may have come as a shock to me and many others, but the feud between Chris Rock and Will Smith has been brewing for a long time.

Chris Rock made fun of Jada Pinkett-Smith in 2016 when she boycotted the Academy Awards for snubbing Will Smith’s performance in Concussion. Chris Rock joked that,

“Jada boycotting the Oscars is like me boycotting Rihanna’s panties. I wasn't invited.”

The feud is ongoing and the blow tonight is sure to only intensify the conflict.

Why is Bruce Willis Retiring From Acting?

In an Instagram post on March 30, 2022, Bruce Willis’s family announced that he is retiring from acting. Image courtesy of Instagram.

Bruce Willis’s family announced that Bruce will be retiring from acting.

The iconic actor known for his roles in blockbusters like Die Hard, The Fifth Element, and The Sixth Sense, has been facing some health issues. He was diagnosed with aphasia and as a result he has made the difficult decision to retire from acting.

Aphasia is a brain condition that affects your ability to communicate. It can cause a person to not understand both written and verbal communication, and it can make it difficult or impossible for a person to speak or write coherently.

The condition often occurs after a stroke, brain injury, or tumor.

This is an incredibly difficult diagnosis for the Willis family to receive and our hearts are with them during this difficult time.

Sex and the City’s Chris Noth Has Been Accused of Sexually Assaulting Two Women

chris noth is accused of sexual assault

Chris Noth’s press coverage for HBO Max’s And Just Like That brought back bad memories for two women who claim to have been assaulted by Noth. Image courtesy of HBO Max.

Chris Noth broke the internet earlier this week with a cheeky Peloton ad that threw shade at the shocking ending to the pilot episode of And Just Like That. Today he’s making headlines again because The Hollywood Reporter broke the shocking story that two women are accusing Chris Noth of sexual assault. To protect the victim’s identities, The Hollywood Reporter (THR) used the pseudonyms Zoe and Lily. Zoe is now 40 years old and works in the entertainment industry in Los Angeles. She contacted THR in October to report the assault. Lily is 31 years old and works as a journalist in New York City and she reached out to THR with her story in August.

Zoe and Lily were both allegedly assaulted by Noth several years ago, but with the resurgence of Noth’s relevance as he reprised his role as Mr. Big in HBO Max’s And Just Like That, both women felt like now was the right time to go public with their stories. Seeing his face in a robust marketing campaign for the show brought back many traumatic memories and the two separately came to the conclusion that they could not remain silent any longer.

Zoe moved to Los Angeles in 2004 after graduating from college and took an entry level job at a firm that had lots of business with celebrities and that is where she met Chris Noth. Noth, who was 49 at the time, immediately took a liking to Zoe and would often stop by her desk to flirt. He then got her phone number and proceeded to leave her flirtatious voicemails. Zoe’s boss at the time saw this flirty behavior in person and heard some of the voicemails that Noth left Zoe. Zoe’s boss thought it was strange that he took such an interest in Zoe of their 27 year age difference. But she didn’t think much of it because “This was peak Sex and the City,” she says. “He was like a god to us.”

Noth was living in New York at the time but he also had an apartment in West Hollywood and invited Zoe to come over and go swimming in the pool. Zoe had a friend who lived in that same building and told him she had been to that pool several times before. That August when Zoe’s best friend from college came to visit, the two went to Noth’s apartment to swim in the pool. This has been corroborated by the friend.

While at the pool Noth showed Zoe a book and asked her to read it and let him know what she thought about it because he was considering doing a project that was based on the book. He left the pool to take a call in his apartment, but he left the book for Zoe and asked her to bring it up to his apartment before she left. Zoe was flattered that someone so well-established in the industry was asking for her opinion.

“He said, ‘I’d love to know what you think.’ I thought, ‘I’m new. He’s asking my opinion — I’ve only been in Hollywood for two months.”

It all went downhill once she went up to his apartment to return the book. She said she was greeted at the door by a kiss from Noth which threw her off guard. She hesitantly kissed him back and then stated that she was going to return to her friend at the pool. Noth then pulled her towards the bed, took off her shorts and bikini bottoms and began raping her. She said it was very painful and she told him to stop but he continued without her consent. When it became clear that he had no intention of stopping she asked if he would get a condom and instead of getting a condom, he laughed at her.

When the assault was over Zoe ran to her friend’s apartment in the same building and found that her friend from college was already there too. Her friend said that Zoe’s whole personality was different when she came back to the apartment. She was acting very aloof and quiet, which was a stark contrast to her normally bubbly and talkative personality. When they left the apartment Zoe’s friend took her to Cedar-Sinai hospital where she reported that she was sexually assaulted but refused to name the attacker out of fear of the possible ramifications of accusing a high profile celebrity of assault. Cedar-Sinai was contacted by the Hollywood Reporter but they stated that they do not keep records dating back to 2004.

Zoe’s boss says she remembers getting a call from Zoe and finding out that Noth had attacked her. Zoe insisted that she keep it a secret and her boss, who was only 25 at the time and in shock from the news, says that she agreed to keep the secret.

A few years after the attack Zoe was experiencing PTSD and sought help from the UCLA Rape Crisis Center, and the center has verified that she was treated at the center for several months.

Seeing Noth everywhere because of the And Just Like That marketing campaign brought back painful memories and Zoe decided that now was the time to speak out about her assault.
------------

Lily met Noth in 2015 at a New York City nightclub where she worked as a server in the VIP section.

“I was truly star-struck,” she says. “He was hitting on me, for sure. I was flattered. I knew he was married, which is shameful of me to admit.”

He got her phone number and asked her out for dinner at Il Cantinori, a restaurant where Carrie Bradshaw threw her birthday on Sex and the City.

Lily’s friend advised her not to go because she got a bad vibe from the whole situation. But Lily insisted it would be fine and said he had seemed so respectful at the club, and it was just dinner. When she arrived at the restaurant at the time he had set for the date the kitchen was already closed so the two sat at the bar and talked about their careers.

The restaurant was closing and Noth invited Lily to come to his apartment which was conveniently located right around the corner. He said he had a nice collection of whiskey that he wanted her to try. Lily agreed to go since they were having such a nice conversation at the restaurant. Sex was the furthest thing from her mind and she thought that they would continue hanging out and talking like they had been at the restaurant.

When they arrived at his apartment Lily said that Noth kept trying to make out with her and she ‘cautiously entertained it’. But she wasn’t into it and tried to nicely end the kissing. That is when he stood up and took off his pants and put his penis in her mouth. Lily brought up the fact that he was married and a father, hoping that this would end his inappropriate behavior. But he claimed that monogamy isn’t real and that is when he raped her.

Afterwards Lily got an Uber and left. A friend said she received a call from Lily in the Uber. Lily stated that Noth had ‘pretty forcibly’ had sex with her and she was hysterically crying. Her friend suggested that they call the police but Lily did not want to.

Noth continued to reach out to Lily after the assault. He left a voicemail that was perceived by Lily and her friend to mean “please don’t tell anyone about this”. He also texted saying “By the way I have to ask did you enjoy our night last week. I thought it was a lot of fun but I wasn’t quite sure how you felt.”. Lily replied saying that she “did feel slightly used” but she didn’t want to talk about it via text. Noth continued reaching out and trying to make plans to see her again, but she gave flakey responses and the two eventually fell out of touch.

Noth is denying the allegations and released the following statement.

“The accusations against me made by individuals I met years, even decades, ago are categorically false,” Noth said in a prepared statement. “These stories could’ve been from 30 years ago or 30 days ago — no always means no — that is a line I did not cross. The encounters were consensual. It’s difficult not to question the timing of these stories coming out. I don’t know for certain why they are surfacing now, but I do know this: I did not assault these women.”

The prepared statement does its best to paint Noth in a good light stating that “no always means no” and that “the encounters were consensual”. But then it goes further to raise questions that are meant to stir doubt in the public’s mind stating “It’s difficult not to question the timing of these stories coming out”. But reporting sexual assault is an incredibly difficult thing to do and many victims, for a myriad of reasons, are never able to report their assault. According to Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN) only 31% of rapes are ever reported. There are many factors that prevent victims from reporting. Of the unreported sexual violence crimes between 2005-2010, 20% of victims feared retaliation and that is what kept them from reporting.

None of us were there with Zoe and Lily but we know that going up against a high powered celebrity’s public relations team would be traumatizing to anyone, let alone someone who had just been sexually assaulted. These allegations have not been proven in a court of law, but if perpetrators are ‘innocent until proven guilty’ then victims should be too.

Why are actors on strike?

SAG-AFTRA members are on strike, here’s what you need to know:

The top paid actors in Hollywood are obviously not hurting for cash, but what about the rest of the actors who are vital components of the film and television industry? A shocking amount can’t even make the $26,000 a year required to qualify for health insurance through SAG-AFTRA.

As streaming services continue to grow in popularity, who is keeping the billions of dollars in profits? The answer is certainly not actors. Without streaming residuals, and the increasing threat of AI eliminating the need to hire actors of all levels, it’s becoming harder and harder to make a livable wage. Actors deserve a fair chance to make a livable wage for their work.

What are actors and studios disputing over?

We stand in solidarity with @sagaftra and we thank actors for their incredible work bringing stories to life ❤️

Be sure to follow @thebasiccinephile and @sagaftra on ways you can support the actors strike!

Why are writers on strike.png

Why are writers on strike?

Members of the WGA are on strike. Here’s what you need to know:

Writers are a vital component of the media industry. Without them you wouldn’t have your favorite comfort movie or your next binge.

Since the introduction of streaming services like @netflix and @hulu, the industry has been completely revolutionized. But, contracts for writers do not reflect the new business model and writers are struggling to survive.

Streaming is incredibly popular and the CEO’s of media powerhouses like @nbcuniversal, @wbpictures, and @disneystudios absolutely have the capability to provide a living wage for EVERYONE who works to produce their content. Instead of passing on the profits fairly to their employees, CEO’s and a fortune few continue to grow richer, while countless others work long days on set for less and less money

THIS IS NOT OKAY.

5 Female Writers in Hollywood That We Literally Can’t Get Enough Of

Hollywood writer, director, and producer Ava DuVernay.

Hollywood writer, director, and producer Ava DuVernay.

Ava Duvernay

Ava DuVernay is a black woman who is breaking barriers every day just by being herself and following her dreams. I heard her on a podcast say that the community she grew up in doesn’t even have a movie theater, so her drive to be more inclusive is literally starting from the ground up. Ava wrote When They See Us and 13th, and we know she’s not done telling stories about racial injustice and the importance of diversity and inclusion.

Mindy Kaling

Mindy Kaling started her career as a writer for The Office and wrote some of the best episodes including Diversity Day and The Dundies. She also wrote The Mindy Project, Late Night and the upcoming Legally Blonde 3. She also wrote my life mantra, “why the f*ck NOT me?” in reference to believing that you’re good enough to deserve to be in the room and have a place at the table.

Hollywood actor, writer and comedian Amy Schumer.

Why I Made the Cinephile Journal

The Cinephile Journal is my new favorite way to doodle, and keep all of my movie reviews organized.

what is the cinephile journal?

The Cinephile Journal is a notebook designed to help you journal about the movies that you watch. It has an easy-to-use rating scale that breaks down the movie into different categories like cinematography and sound design. It has blank pages that can be used for jotting down notes, or for creatively expressing yourself. I like to use the blank pages for drawing and writing down quotes from the movie.

Why did I create the Cinephile Journal?

As a film critic and active participant in the world of internet fandoms on Filmstagram and Film Twitter, I found that writing movie reviews had become a chore. I struggled to find the motivation to write reviews because the task of choosing a movie to watch, paying close attention to it, and then organizing my thoughts afterward felt so daunting. I needed a way to make it fun and easy, and that’s how the Cinephile Journal was born! I wanted a fun and low-pressure way to spark creativity and enjoy writing reviews again. So I thought, what’s more fun than doodling?

I am by no means an artist, but I thought about how much fun kids have when they draw. Most of them are not good at art either, so why do I have to be good at something to enjoy it? Then I started to research the benefits of drawing and doodling. According to a study by Harvard, doodling can relieve stress and improve memory. Doodling can also help you process your emotions and improve your mood. I have found that drawing in my Cinephile Journal after watching a movie gives my brain a chance to process what I’ve just watched and when I’m done with my drawing it is easier for me to rate the movie.

Another cool part of the Cinephile Journal is the easy-to-use rating scale. For me, it’s nice to limit the amount of information that my brain is focused on at one time. Answering big questions like “What did you think of the movie?” can be hard to a place to start. Instead, the rating scale breaks it down into smaller, more manageable questions like “What would you rate the cinematography out of a scale of 1 to 5?”. This way I can quickly answer smaller questions that in turn help me answer the bigger questions and thus create a holistic review.

I also wanted the Cinephile Journal to be universally usable. Whether you’re a seasoned film critic that wants to spice up their writing routine, or you’re an 8th grader who has never learned about filmmaking, the Cinephile Journal is accessible to everyone. The rating categories are all broken down and explained and provide a great entry point for someone who has never reviewed a movie before.

Where can I get a Cinephile Journal?

If you want to spark your creativity, improve your mood and help your memory, you can get your own Cinephile Journal today on Amazon for only $11.95. If you are active on social media, please tag @thebasiccinephile in all of your Cinephile Journal posts so that we can see all of your awesome journal entries! We welcome your feedback and we would greatly appreciate it if you could leave us a review on Amazon after your purchase. I am so excited to share the Cinephile Journal with you and I hope you love it as much as I do!

5 Movies That Aren’t Supposed to be Scary That Scare Me

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory creepy

Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka haunts my dreams.

  1. Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory

A single, middle aged man invites a group of children to his chocolate factory, who wouldn’t be scared? Gene Wilder’s performance as Willy Wonka has haunted me since I first saw it as a child. I know he’s supposed to be eccentric but the fact that I can’t figure him out just creeps me out. And don’t get me started on that co-sleeping situation that Charlie’s grandparents have going on… Willy Wonka is low-key scary.

2. The Wizard of Oz

Dorothy, Lion and Scarecrow are a-okay in my book, and while the Wicked Witch of the West is terrifying she’s got nothing on the flying monkeys! I think my fear of the Wicked Witch of the West is deep rooted in some childhood trauma. My birthday is 2 days before Halloween, so on Halloween before I turned 1 my mom decided to dress me up as the Wicked Witch of the West. While I was still napping she painted my face green and got me dressed in my costume and when I woke up she showed me my face in the mirror and she said the look in my eyes was of pure terror. Who wouldn’t be scared of waking up green?? But I’ll take a surprise green face any day over the horrifying flying monkeys. I’ve legitimately had nightmares about the flying monkeys and I hope I never have one again because 30 year old me would be just as scared as 10 year old me was.

Dorothy, the wicked witch of the west, and a flying monkey in The Wizard of Oz

Seriously, how am I not going to be terrified of the flying monkeys in The Wizard of Oz?

James and the Giant Peach movie creepy

The creepy animation in James and the Giant Peach reads more Coraline than Disney princess.

3. James and the Giant Peach

Call me crazy but I don’t want to crawl into a peach and become friends with giant insects! I don’t call that an adventure, I call that torture. In addition to giant spiders, and gothic style stop-motion, you’ve got James’s traumatic backstory. He’s an orphan because his parents were killed by a stampeding rhinoceros. Roald Dahl was really trying to scare generations of kids and make them never want to go to the zoo, or go anywhere near bugs. The adults in this movie are terrifying too. Poor James is raised by his ugly and frankly abusive aunts. And this is supposed to be a movie for kids? James and the Giant Peach is dark as hell and I think it will always creep me out.

Johnny Depp as Edward Scissorhands cutting hair

I will never think of haircuts and topiaries in the same way after watching Edward Scissorhands.

4. Edward Scissorhands

A strong case could be made for adding every Tim Burton movie to this list. His signature gothic-fantasy is supposed to juxtapose romance with edge and while the highly stylized worlds he creates are always a little off-putting, there’s something extra unnerving about a man with scissors for hands. A man who just wants love, but his hands are literal tools of destruction. And I just have so many unanswered questions for Edward. How does he go to the bathroom?? This is a movie that keeps me up at night as I spiral down the scissors-for-hands rabbit hole.

Buzz Lightyear and Woody in Toy Story

Normal kids saw Toy Story and wished that their toys would come alive and play with them. I hid all of my toys because I was convinced they would attack me in my sleep. You could say that I’ve always had an overly active imagination…

5. Toy story

I know that inanimate objects don’t live a rich, unseen life while I’m out of the room. I know that my things aren’t sad when I clean my room and donate things that I no longer use. I know that my childhood toys aren’t lonely because I no longer play with them. But like, what if? This is the kind of guilt that I don’t need in my life, yet here we are. The sadness of this beautiful franchise haunts me. As a kid I kept toys in my parent’s room for weeks after I saw Toy Story because I was afraid that they would come alive at night and attack me. Thank God I never saw Chucky because there’s no way I would have recovered.

8. Aunjanue Ellis

We love a bold red carpet look, and this orange Versace ball gown on Aunjanue Ellis was a showstopper. The silhouette perfectly accentuates Ellis’s body in all the right places. She may not have gone home with an Oscar, but she rocked the red carpet!

7. Kodi Smit-McPhee

Move over black tux! We’re bringing back colored tuxedos and they are not the cringy 80’s tuxes from your parents wedding and prom pics. This custom Bottega Veneta blue tuxedo is boldly accessorized and solidifies that Kodi Smit-McPhee is a young star to watch on the red carpet!

6. Zendaya

Zendaya at the Academy Awards red carpet

Shocking absolutely no one, Zendaya has made her way onto our best dressed list. Honestly, you can always count on Zendaya to deliver a look and we commend her consistently chique style. Her cropped menswear top and sequined skirt are Valentino.

5. Sebastian Yatra

The Columbian singer made a splash on the red carpet with a pink Moschino complete with tails and pink loafers to match. We love a man who isn’t afraid to break from tradition and serve a strong look! Minimally accessorized, this suit doesn’t need any help turning up the volume.

4. Simu Liu

Red was the color of the night and Simu Liu wore it well in this Versace tux! The cropped pants and loafers give him an effortlessly cool appearance, and the playful look is anything but forgettable. We can’t wait to see this Marvel superstar on many red carpets to come!

3. Andrew Garfield

Andrew Garfield at the Academy Awards red carpet

Andrew Garfield in Saint Laurent is simply divine. The tux at a cursory glance appears straightforward and elegant. But upon closer inspection you can see how the designer played with texture, shape and silhouette to give us a new twist on the classic tuxedo.

2. Lily James

Sexy, stunning, confident, playful, I honestly don’t have enough words to describe this Versace dream on Lily James! The natural hair, minimal accessories, and form fitting dress allow Lily James and her beauty to shine and it honestly took my breath away.

1. Ariana DeBose

She won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, she is our best dressed of the night, honestly what can’t Ariana DeBose do? The custom gown/tuxedo hybrid by Valentino packed a punch and demands that you notice Ariana. The proportions and tailoring are perfect and deliver both feminine sexiness and masculine confidence. There were many amazing looks from the 2022 Academy Awards, but Ariana DeBose had the look that we just couldn’t stop thinking about!

5 Reasons Why I’m “best friends forever” with Now and Then

5 Reasons Why I’m “best friends forever” with Now and Then. Image courtesy of New Line Cinema/IMDb..

The message “Friends Forever” was printed on every poster and graffitied on every bathroom stall in the mid to late 90s. I had a purple shirt from Limited Too stamped with these words in bright silver glitter, which annoyingly got all over my mom’s new 1998 Volvo. My mom regretted this purchase, but I loved it more than anything and wore it until it shrunk to almost nothing. Other words of empowerment like “Girls Rule and Boys Drool” or “Girl Power” were everywhere, but I credit Now and Then for inspiring me to be a little badass feminist.

This nostalgic 90’s flick starred our queen Christina Ricci, the sassy Thora Birch, the very mature Gaby Hoffmann, and the memorable Ashleigh Aston Moore.

“The summer of 1970 started off like any other summer…before Nintendo and MTV, we had to find other ways to entertain ourselves”. If you’re not familiar with this movie, I encourage you to spend $2.99 this weekend and watch it with a friend because even so many years later, it still holds up.

Here’s why:

1) Devon Sawa and Christina Ricci reunite again.

Devon Sawa and Christina Ricci in Now and Then

Devon Sawa and Christina Ricci in Now and Then. Image courtesy of IMDb.

We all loved when Devon asked Christina if he could “keep her” in 1995’s Casper so seeing them reunite in Now and Then, where the awkward preteen vibes flowed like a 7 Eleven Icy machine, is nothing short of magic. The few scenes they share are full of the angst that we all had at that time in our lives. We would be caught off guard with questions like “How did my annoying neighbor get so hot all of a sudden?” or “Did she always have boobs?”. Roberta telling the eldest Wormy Wormer, “if you tell anyone about this, I’ll beat the shit out of you” will always warm my heart. She was the tough and cool reflection of a female sparkplug who I wanted to be and will always admire.

2) Teeny and Roberta learned to love an outcast.

At the beginning of the movie, the group of four girls perform an elementary séance in their small-town cemetery. They get spooked and think a child ghost has come back and asked them to figure out what happened to him and his family. They later realize that the father of the boy is Pete, an outcast from their town who later saves Samantha from drowning in a sewer. This surprising act of heroism and kindness created a place in my heart for all the Pete’s of the world. He also leaves us with an admirable lesson, “Things will happen in your life that you can’t stop but that’s not a reason to shut out the world.” Damn Pete, you laid the truth on thick.

3) Roberta leaning on her friends while grieving her mother.

I’m very lucky to say that I didn’t lose anyone when I was a kid and wrapping your head around death is hard at any age. Christina Ricci does an amazing job sharing the pain of Roberta’s loss on screen and for me, this is the scene that graduated her from child to serious actor. Her faking her death and insulting Crissy, the easy target of the group, is a sign of Roberta hurting which ultimately leads to an explosion of anger and grief in the dusty old attic full of memories. This scene taught me that if you don’t have friends to help you stay grounded then you might just lose yourself and spin out of control.

4) Sam punches a kid for disrespecting Roberta’s mother.

Christina Ricci proved that girls CAN play sports, DUH. Image courtesy of IMDb.

When the girls decide to join in an all-boys softball game, a misogynist little shit decides to taunt Roberta before she goes up to bat. He tells her that “girls can’t play softball”. I love this scene because it’s a huge fuck you to movies like The Sandlot where it silently teaches young boys to exclude girls from participating in sports.

Roberta retaliates and wails him right across the face, knocking him off the fence he was sitting on. After she beats the shit out of the little psycho for a few minutes, he makes an unforgivable remark about Roberta’s dead mother. Samantha, the calmest and most mature of the group, gives no fucks and runs ahead of Roberta, tackling the little bitch to the ground. Alexa, play “Best Friend’ by Saweetie. Hands down, the best scene of the entire film.

5) Gathering for the birth of Crissy’s baby.

When a close childhood friend welcomes a little one, a lot changes and suddenly you’re hit with the realization that “this baddie just gave birth to another little baddie”. Women are incredible, aren’t we? When they arrive at Chrissy’s house, they all arrive with very different vibes. Roberta, played by Rosie O’Donnell, is a charming and funny doctor. Teeny, played by Melanie Griffith (Dakota Johnson’s mom for all of you youngsters), arrives in a limo letting the audience know that she achieved her dreams of being famous. Crissy, played by Rita Wilson, is very pregnant and still thinks “breast” is a swear word. Samantha, played by Demi Moore, arrives smoking like a chimney and gives off this very cool “I’m a successful writer in New York City” energy. But even though they’re all completely different from one another and have spent years apart, they still made time in their mid-thirties to reunite and pick up where they left off 25 years ago. It’s inspiring watching four women show up for each other and play truth or dare in the old, dusty tree house they bought in the summer of 1970. Proving that there is nothing more badass than female friendship and that it is indeed possible to be best friends forever.

Summer Camp Has Been Cancelled, Due to Lack of Hustle, Here’s How We’re Dealing With It

lee-vue-Wqt15MLirEQ-unsplash.jpg

If you’re like me you’ve spent many summers sweating your balls off and running around in the great outdoors to give groups of excited kids an awesome week at summer camp. Or, if you’re richer than me, you attended camp as a child and have fun memories of swimming in the lake and making friendships bracelets for cabin mates that would shed tears when you parted at the end of the week, promising to be bbf’s (best friends forever). But this summer is different. Summer camp has been replaced with drive-by birthday parties, and Zoom playdates. So if you find the nostalgia hitting extra hard and making you miss your camp buddies, check out these movie suggestions that pair nicely with s’mores and lanyard weaving.

  1. The Parent Trap

1961- The Parent Trap starring Hayley Mills

1961- The Parent Trap starring Hayley Mills. Image courtesy of Disney.

It’s hard to find a movie that is more quintessentially camp than The Parent Trap. Both versions, 1961 starring Hayley Mills and 1998 starring Lindsay Lohan, are both excellent options. So, if you find yourself wishing you could switch places with your long-lost twin and meet your birth parents, both versions of The Parent Trap are currently streaming on Disney+.

2. Heavyweights

ben-stiller-tony-perkis-perkisystem-ice-breaking.png

Heavyweights (1995). Image courtesy of Disney.

Is this movie problematic? Absolutely! We have blatant body shaming and cultural appropriation, for starters. But we also have comedy gold. Co-written by Judd Apatow, Heavyweights follows the story of a “fat camp” that is bought by Tony Perkins (Ben Stiller), a fitness guru who’s methods are militant and controversial. I pray to god that Heavyweights is not like any camp that you have experienced. But if you’re looking for a laugh, Heavyweights is sure to deliver and it’s currently streaming on Disney+.

3. Wet Hot American Summer

Wet Hot American Summer

Wet Hot American Summer (2001). Image courtesy of Focus Features.

If you’re looking for a raunchy cult classic starring literally EVERYONE, then Wet Hot American Summer is the camp movie for you. Wet Hot American Summer follows the young and reckless staff of Camp Firewood on their emotional and epic last day of camp. The best part of the movie is that there are two seasons of shows that follow up the movie; Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp, and Wet Hot American Summer: 10 Years Later. The original cast of the movie, shot in 2001, came back to film First Day of Camp in 2015 and it’s hilarious to see these much older adults play the same characters like they haven’t aged. Seriously, you need to watch Wet Hot American Summer which is available to rent on Amazon Prime Video, and the spin off shows are both available on Netflix.

4. Camp Rock

Summer camp, but make it a musical. The Jonas brothers, Demi Lovato, emo hair, and some tragic scarves, what more can you ask for? Camp Rock will have you squeezing into your skinniest jeans and singing “We Rock” at the top of your lungs! Camp Rock is now streaming on Disney+.

5. American Pie

Okay, confession time. I’ve never actually seen American Pie. But as someone who was in band, and went to band camp (albeit a lame, day camp version that just involved a lot of marching in the football field and then going home), I had to endure a lot of “this one time at band camp” jokes from my non-band friends, so I feel entitled to add this movie to the list. It’s currently streaming on HBO and I will be watching it soon!

@daisystewart_ showing us how The Joker got those scars.

  1. The Joker

You want to know how I got these scars? There are so many iconic iterations of this beloved Batman villain, but my personal favorite will always be Heath Ledger’s performance in The Dark Knight. If you’re going for a creepy vibe and have some skills with special effects makeup, The Joker is a great costume choice for you! If you love this look as much as we do, be sure to follow @daisystewart_ for more special effects makeup inspo.

2. The wicked witch of the west

If you’re feeling villainous, but want a costume that requires less makeup skills, the wicked witch of the west is a classic choice. Look out my pretty because Hayley of @unlimitedreviews will get you, and your little dog too! Bonus points if you can find someone to accompany you as a flying monkey.

3. The Bluth’s Frozen Banana Stand

As Pop Pop likes to remind us, there’s always money in the banana stand! If you’re a huge fan of Arrested Development like I am, there are no shortage of characters that make a fun Halloween costume. But if you’re looking for a costume that’s a little more off-beat and oversized, I highly recommend spending the night dressed as Balboa Island’s favorite frozen banana stand.

6. Wayne’s World

Party time, it’s excellent. Yeah, whatever. If you are looking for an excellent costume for duo’s of any gender identity then Wayne and Garth of SNL and movie fame are always an excellent option. Bonus points awarded if you karaoke Bohemian Rhapsody, or find an Alice Cooper to bow down to because “we’re not worthy!”.

7. Mary Poppins

Winds in the east, mist comin’ in. Like something is brewing, about to begin. If you feel like you need a spoonful of sugar to get through the rest of 2020, consider dressing up as everyone’s favorite nanny for Halloween.

Celebrate Star Wars Day With an Ewok Dog!

May the 4th be with you. Star Wars Day. Dog dress as an Ewok.

Happy Star Wars Day from our Ewok, Harv!

May the 4th Be With You!

When we adopted our dog Harv in 2018, one of the first things we thought was “he looks like an ewok!”. And we’re not along in thinking this! Just this weekend, we passed a stranger on a hike that asked what kind of dog we have because it looks just like an ewok!

Of course when Halloween rolled around we wanted to get him an ewok costume. But us being us, we waited too long and his size was out of stock. So in 2021 we planned ahead for once and ordered it early!

It was a tough costume to get Harv to wear because it has a hood that covers his ears. But we managed to get him to sit still long enough to capture this moment!

Harv sat still for approximately 2 seconds. Just long enough for us to get one photo of him in his dog ewok costume!

Sometimes, all it takes is one photo! So with way too much time and effort, I present to you “Harv, the ewok!”

Star Wars Day. Dog in an ewok costume photoshopped next to ewoks from Star Wars.

One of these ewoks is not like the others… Can you spot the ewok dog?

Ewoks with a dog in an ewok costume. Star Wars Day.

Oh ewok dog! Peek-a-boo, I see you!

Star Wars Day. C3PO and R2D2 with a dog in an ewok costume.

These are not the droids (and ewok dog) you are looking for!

Where can I find an ewok costume for my dog?

Shop the look for your dog! And hopefully your dog wears their ewok costume for a least a couple seconds longer than Harv.

Follow us on Instagram and tag us in your ewok dog pics so that we can share them on our story!
