Ava and Nathan are adjacent to the life they want; white picket fence, good careers, and a baby on the way. But neither can seem to keep up with the Jones’s. Nathan’s dead end job coaching tennis in Malibu can’t fulfill the dream he had to dominate the pros before an injury ended his career. And Ava is finding that you can’t make a living as a realtor if you’re not able to close the deal. When they call a repairman to fix their sink they get more than they bargained for when they discover a shocking secret— he’s a serial killer. But, rather than turning him in the couple has a deranged idea that just might solve all their financial problems. They start a true crime podcast featuring the murderer.
This satiric comedy is everything that I love. Two of my favorite actors, Kaley Cuoco (The Big Bang Theory) and Chris Messina (The Mindy Project), drive the plot with outlandish yet somehow believable antics. Everything is so over-the-top that I was able to buy in to this world that pokes fun at our society’s infatuation with true crime podcasts. If you’re looking for your next dark comedy, you should definitely give Based on a True Story a shot!
